Built on a rocky outcrop above the sand dunes of the Northumberland coast, Bamburgh Castle dates back to around 420 AD when it was a Celtic / Britton fort becoming an Anglo Saxon castle in 590. The Vikings destroyed the castle in 993 and eventually became the property of King Henry II who was probably responsible for building the Keep in 1164. In the 17th century, financial difficulties led to the castle deteriorating, but it was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian era industrialist William Armstrong, who completed its restoration. The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is open to the public.
