Artist's Description
Paul Williams photos of the naturalistic statues in William Ricketts Sanctuary set in the woods of the Dandenon Mountains, Melbourne, Australia. From 1949 to 1960 William Ricketts made frequent trips into Central Australia to live with Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte Aboriginal Australians, whose traditions and culture inspired his sculpture. He was not an Aboriginal by blood but considered himself adopted by the Pitjantjatjara nation. William Ricketts work is controversial but there is little doubt that it has a great impact when visitors to the snctuary discover his sculpture set deeep in the dense woodland of the Dandenons. black and white photo
