Caerlaverock Castle was built in the 12th century as the stronghold of the Maxwell family and remained so until it was abandoned in the 17th century. Caerlaverock Castle is a triangular shaped castle with a bastion entrance at one end surrounded by a moat. Several fortifications precede the present castle which was built by Sir Aymer Maxwell began construction of the present castle in 1258–1260. Within 30 years Caerlaverock Castle lay under siege by Edward I as he marched northwards to subdue the Scotts. Sir Eustace Maxwell mounted a vigorous defence of Caerlaverock and repelled the English army attacks several times. Eventually though the garrison was forced to surrender, and the English were...
